I’ve had another fun week listening to music produced by our fantastic users. Here are a few of my recent favorites:
This mix is a great example of a tight rock/funk sound, produced from basic loops all submitted by one Jamglue user. One listen and you’ll be inspired to incorporate this into your own work. Anybody wanna take a crack at adding some vocals?
Another great mix from the same user, but this one has a techno feel. It’s got a catchy beat, along with some dynamic panning of sound effects that keeps you engaged.
This mix overlays a dazzling piano sonata with MLK oratory, and the resulting sound is quite stirring.
This is a lighthearted mix of Bushisms over a funk beat, along with a very well-placed car-failing-to-start sound effect.
It’s been a week since we featured our first batch of mixes, and we thought you might want to see some more good stuff that has emerged lately.
In case you missed the news about last week’s elections, this mix serves as a quick musical recap. I really dig the cheering of those politically-precocious children.
This mix has been passed back and forth between two Jamglue users who have worked to refine it.
This mix was initially produced offline, but the producer replicated it in the Jamglue mixer. This is great because now other people can look at the pieces and remix them.
Maybe it’s the hot piano/drum riff, or maybe it’s the old-tech voice sample, but something about this mix makes it very catchy.
One of our new users today, molly, was awesome enough to add a screencast of Jamglue to her growing list of tutorial screencasts on screeniac. It walks a new user through the process of signing up for Jamglue, creating a new mix, and using the main features of the social network. The tutorial for the remixer is particularly great for someone new to mixing. Be sure to check it out. Thanks Molly!
The TechCrunch article gave a great overview of us and our fellow YCombinator-funded companies. It was exciting to see Jamglue get a bit of discussion in the comments, though we’re hoping that Aaron is better at predicting the future than lemon o brien.
We’re also very excited about our full-length mention on Mashable, and we’re very flattered by some of Pete’s comments on the site. For example:
In short, it’s just incredibly easy for talentless people like me to create a mix that actually sounds pretty good.
But, best of all are the new users that we’ve gained from this publicity. It’s really exciting to see new people on the site and listen to their music. For example, I really like — the use of is genius. I can’t wait for Second and Third!
Update: I know this post is getting long, but I couldn’t sleep at night if I didn’t share this with our loyal readers: . Who’s going to be the first to remix it?
As you may have seen in Gautam’s recent round-up, we’ve finally turned on our embedded player for everybody!
Unlike YouTube’s monolithic embedded player, we’ve focused on flexibility by exposing the raw elements to people sharing mixes and tracks. This allows you to fully tweak and style our player however you want.
We’ve also been working hard to make sure that the player stays fast and that embedded music in even very popular blogs will not impact the performance of our main site.
We’re still tweaking the default look and coping with different embedding policies (don’t be so scared, FOX Interactive!), but please try it and let us know what you think.
One of the best parts of working on Jamglue is listening to the music that our users are making. Our web community is still in its infancy, and we’re constantly working to improve our tools, but our stellar beta users have already produced some great work that I’d like to show off:
This is a feel-good mix with a spoken story over some sweet Rhodes piano.
This mix puts some great Mike Tyson and James Bond clips over a funk track.
This is a sweet jungle mix that a user in California made using tracks contributed by users in Seattle and Calgary.
This one really feels like a movie soundtrack to me. Lots of interesting sounds come together to paint a vivid image.
What do all these mixes have in common? They’re catchy, and they were made by the combined efforts of people who don’t know each other! I’m really excited to see that people are collaborating freely and implicitly, without having to coordinate with one another. And you can continue the trend; if you hear something you like, try remixing it to make your own version.
This is intended to be the first of many posts that highlight cool new Jamglue music. Stay tuned for more!
A huge congratulations to team Reddit on their new partnership with CondeNet! I put on my brand new Reddit shirt the day it was announced; little did I know that by midday I’d be pointing at it while asking “Did you hear?”
Then came the hardest part of my job- I had to tell our two 1U servers that if they had stayed with Reddit instead of making the cross-country trek with us, their stock options would have kept them in network and power for the rest of their lives. That’s what they get for jumping-ship.
We’re all really happy for the founders, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer group!
